Indian Passport Photo Size for VFS Global — Complete Guide

Updated June 2026 · 5 min read

Getting the photo size exactly right is one of the most important parts of your VFS Global passport application. Here are the precise specifications for 2026 — print size, digital size, background, and all the ICAO 2025 rules in one place.

Print vs Digital — You Need Both

A common point of confusion: the VFS Global Indian passport application requires two different photo formats.

Both must show the same recent photo and meet the same compliance rules.

📐 Why 35×45 mm and not 2×2 inch?

Indian passport photos use the 35×45 mm size, which is different from the US passport 2×2 inch (51×51 mm) size. Don't use a US passport photo for your Indian passport — the proportions are wrong and it will be rejected. Note: the OCI card photo IS square (51×51 mm), so check which document you're applying for.

How to Get the Size Right

You have three options:

  1. Photo studio — reliable but costs $15–25 and requires a trip
  2. Manual editing — free but tedious and error-prone; one wrong measurement means rejection
  3. AI photo tool — upload a photo and get both formats automatically in 2 minutes for $4.99

Printing Your 35×45 mm Photos

Once you have your print sheet, take it to any photo lab — Walgreens, CVS, Costco — and print it as a standard 4×6 inch photo at 300 DPI. The sheet has multiple copies laid out with cut guides. Cut along the lines and you'll have correctly sized 35×45 mm photos.
