Passport Seva Photo Requirements 2026
When you apply or renew your Indian passport through the Passport Seva online portal, you'll need to upload a digital photo that meets specific size and format rules. Here's exactly what Passport Seva requires in 2026.
Digital Photo Upload Specifications
| Requirement | Specification |
|---|---|
| Dimensions | 630 × 810 pixels |
| Aspect ratio | 7:9 |
| File format | JPEG (.jpg) |
| Maximum file size | Under 250 KB |
| Background | Plain white |
| Color | Color photo (not black & white) |
| Head coverage | About 80–85% of frame height |
Photo Content Rules
Beyond the technical size, your photo must follow ICAO 2025 content standards:
- Recent photo, taken within the last 6 months
- Full front view, looking directly at the camera
- Neutral expression with mouth closed (no smiling)
- Both eyes open and clearly visible
- No glasses
- No hats or head coverings (except daily-worn religious coverings that don't shadow the face)
- Plain white background with even lighting and no shadows
- Sharp, in-focus, with natural skin tones
1. File too large — the photo must be under 250 KB. High-resolution phone photos are often 3–5 MB and need compression. 2. Wrong dimensions — the portal expects 630×810 px exactly. A square or wrong-ratio image gets rejected at upload.

Create My Passport Photo →How to Compress Your Photo Under 250 KB
If your photo is too large, you have a few options:
- Use an AI photo tool — automatically resizes and compresses to spec
- Manual compression — use an image editor to reduce quality/dimensions, but you risk going below the required resolution
- Online compressors — free but you must manually verify the final dimensions are still 630×810 px
The challenge with manual methods is hitting under 250 KB while keeping the exact 630×810 px dimensions and good quality — too much compression makes the photo blurry, which also causes rejection.
After You Upload
Once your digital photo passes the Passport Seva upload, you'll also need printed 35×45 mm photos for your physical VFS Global document package. Make sure both come from the same recent photo.
